Eric Leroy Adams (born September 1, 1960) is an American politician and former law enforcement officer who is serving as New York City’s 110th mayor since January 1, 2022. As mayor, he has taken a firm stance against crime. Adams worked for the New York City Transit Police and later the New York City Police Department for almost 20 years, retiring as a captain. From 2006 until 2013, he represented Brooklyn’s 20th Senate District in the New York State Senate. Adams was elected Brooklyn Borough President in November 2013. He was the first African-American to occupy the office when he was re-elected in November 2017.

Adams was born on September 1, 1960, in Brownsville, Brooklyn. Adams grew up in a rat-infested tenement in Bushwick, Brooklyn, and his family was so impoverished that he regularly took a bag of clothes to school with him in case of an unexpected eviction. His mother was able to gather enough money to purchase a home and relocate the family to South Jamaica, Queens.

Adams graduated from Queens’ Bayside High School in 1978. While working as a mechanic and a mailroom clerk at the Brooklyn District Attorney’s office, he began attending college, earning an associate degree from the New York City College of Technology, a bachelor’s degree from the John Jay College of Criminal Justice, and an M.P.A. from Marist College.

Dorothy Mae Adams-Streeter, his mother, worked double shifts as a housecleaner and had just a third-grade education. His father was a butcher who battled alcoholism. In the 1950s, both of his parents relocated to New York City from Alabama.

Adams was president of the Grand Council of Guardians, an African American patrolmen’s organisation, in the 1990s. In 1995, Adams served as an escort for Mike Tyson after he was released from prison. He was a founding member of 100 Blacks in Law Enforcement Who Care, an advocacy group for black police officers that advocated for criminal justice reform and frequently spoke out against police brutality and racial profiling. Adams was a first responder at the World Trade Center site following the September 11 attacks. In 2006, he retired from the police department with the rank of captain.

Adams began to consider a political career in the 1990s, with the ultimate objective of becoming Mayor of New York City. Lynch pushed Adams to first acquire a bachelor’s degree, progress through the ranks of the NYPD, and then run successfully for a lesser governmental post.
In the Democratic primary for New York’s 11th congressional district in 1994, Adams campaigned against incumbent Major Owens.
According to the Board of Elections, Adams registered as a Republican in 1997 before transferring back to the Democratic Party in 2001. Adams has stated that his decision to join the Republican Party was motivated by his dissatisfaction with Democratic leadership.

Adams ran for the New York State Senate in 2006. He was elected four times and served until 2013. He represented the 20th Senate District, which included sections of Brooklyn. Adams was one of 24 state senators in New York who voted in support of marital equality.

Adams was appointed Chair of the Senate Racing and Wagering Committee in 2010. Eric was a vociferous critic of the New York Police Department’s “stop and frisk” programme, which disproportionately affected young black and Latino males. He advocated for legislation that would prohibit the NYPD from collecting data on people who had been stopped but not prosecuted. Adams co-chaired New York State Legislators Against Illegal Guns in 2012.

Adams was elected Brooklyn Borough President with 90.8 per cent of the vote on November 5, 2013, more than any other borough president candidate in New York City that year. He was elected with 83.0 percent of the vote in 2017. He ran unchallenged in the Democratic primary in each of his campaigns.

Adams has urged New York City to construct affordable homes on municipally owned land and on land now utilised for parking lots. In July 2018, Adams announced a $10 million, 19-plaintiff case filed in Kings County Supreme Court with the Housing Rights Initiative (HRI).

Adams signed Brooklyn up for Chicago Public Schools’ “Hour of Code” challenge. This challenge was created to help pupils improve their computing abilities. Brooklyn pupils triumphed, with more than 80% of the district schools in Brooklyn participating in the programme. Adams kicked off the Family Friendly Brooklyn project by opening a breastfeeding area at Brooklyn Borough Hall to the public.

Adams’ polling position improved in May, and he emerged as the frontrunner in the closing weeks of the race.  Crime in New York increased in the months preceding up to the election, which may have aided Adams. On July 6, Adams won the Democratic primary in a come-from-behind victory over Kathryn Garcia, Maya Wiley, Andrew Yang, and others in New York’s first major contest to employ ranked-choice voting.

In the general election, Adams faced Republican Curtis Sliwa and was widely favoured to win. On November 2, 2021, he was elected with 67.4% of the vote against Sliwa’s 27.9%. After being elected, Adams reaffirmed his vow to reestablish a plainclothes police unit that deals with gun crime.

Adams will publish his administration’s “complete vision” for affordable housing in June 2022.  The strategy, however, was criticised for being too hazy.

During the 1993 mayoral race, Adams, a supporter of incumbent mayor David Dinkins, made a controversial remark about Herman Badillo, a candidate for New York State Comptroller. These remarks became a source of contention throughout the race, causing problems for Dinkins, who ultimately lost the election.
Shortly after taking office, Adams requested a waiver from the Conflicts of Interest Board in order to recruit his brother, Bernard, for a $210,000-a-year post in the NYPD as his “personal security detail.” Bernard began working for the position on December 30, 2021, two days before Adams was sworn in as mayor. Adams was accused of nepotism for making this choice.
