Who is Jigna Vora? Biography, Wiki, Age, Net Worth, Husband

Jigna Vora was an Asian Age newsperson. She was one of the two main suspects in the killing of Mid-Day reporter Jyotirmoy Dey. Unidentified attackers killed J Dey on 11th June 2011 in Hiranandani, Powai, while spectators witnessed the incident. They identified the assassins as members of a seven-person group associated with the underworld gangster Chhota Rajan. Mumbai police initially implicated Rajan and Vora after conducting a preliminary investigation. They transferred the case to the CBI in 2016.

In association with the inquiry, Mumbai police imprisoned Vora on November 25, 2011. She was the deputy bureau chief of the Asian Age newspaper’s Mumbai bureau at the time and was 37 years old. Authorities arrested her for providing Chhota Rajan with crucial information about Dey, which included details about his residence and the license plate number of his bike.

In February 2012, the Mumbai officer filed a charge sheet against Vora under the persistent policies of the Maharashtra Control Of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) and for a number of additional criminal infractions. At the time, investigators found “circumstantial evidence” against Vora, which included three phone calls she was alleged to have made to the gangster. She then clarified that Vora had called Rajan exclusively to place an interview.

According to Rajan, Vora prompted him to murder Dey due to their “professional feud.” Sachin Kalbag, who was then the executive editor of Mid-Day, refuted Rajan’s claim. In his interview with India Today, he claimed that Vora was “too junior” to Dey to be rivals. The authorities granted bail to Vora, and she was free on July 27, 2012. She received bail because, as per the Press Trust of India, she was a single parent responsible for taking care of a young child.

Behind The Bars In Byculla: My Days in Prison is her story in her own words, of her time in jail, the court hearings, and her years as a crime reporter breaking many front-page stories. The information regarding her being a single parent with a young child and receiving bail was published in September 2019.

The film “Scoop” is based on the same book, “Behind The Bars In Byculla: My Days in Prison,” published in September 2019, written by reporter and crime journalist Jigna Vora, which chronicles her experiences after being accused of the murder of another reporter.  Along with Karishma Tanna Bangera, the cast also includes Mohammad Zeeshan Ayyub, Harman Baweja, Tannishtha Chatterjee, Tejasvini Kolhapure, and Shikha Talsania.

What was the J Dey murder case about?

In 2011, unknown gunmen shot Mid-Day’s senior journalist J Dey, which led to a retired journalist named Jigna Vora, known for covering crimes in Mumbai, becoming a suspect in the killing plot. At that time, Jigna was working for Asian Age and was charged with conspiring in Dey’s murder along with Chhota Rajan. She was in jeopardy because she had recently conducted an interview with a don from the criminal underground.

According to the management, she allegedly gave Rajan details regarding Dey’s movements, on the cause of which he despatched his triggermen to kill the reporter. Jigna was imprisoned and detained for six years while the problem was persistent. She was acquitted of all charges in the year 2017. She reported Behind Bars in Byculla: My Days in Prison after existing terminated from jail, which functioned as the motivation for the online series Scoop.
