Kumar Kartikeya Singh, 24, was an outstanding volleyball player before he turned to cricket seriously. He had a pivotal experience while in Lucknow for state-level trials. Kartikeya transferred to the Lal Bahadur Shastri Cricket Academy in Delhi after failing to make the UP under-16 team. Due to the high cost of living in Delhi, he resided in a hostel in Ghaziabad. But his health suffered from the six-hour commute he made every day. The difficulty was made worse by the night job he was working to cover his bills. He was washing fresh batches of tires at a tire factory. Before coach Sanjay Bharadwaj recognized his talent, the ordeal lasted a whole year. Bharadwaj took care of his bills while serving as his mentor and guide. He only had to concentrate on the game of cricket.
However, Kartikeya was unable to pass the state trials in Delhi, so Bharadwaj suggested that he try from Madhya Pradesh where he knew of a person who could assist. Despite moving to Shahdol to try out for the Madhya Pradesh team, Kartikeya was unable to play for over two years due to residency concerns. Money was a problem for him even after he began playing because divisional matches did not pay well. He was able to pay his bills because of the sporadic “man of the match” accolades he received.
Kartikeya’s big moment came in April when Mumbai Indians selected him for a 120 lakh price to fill in for the injured Arshad Khan. On April 30 at Mumbai’s DY Patil Stadium against Rajasthan Royals, he made his IPL debut.
