She is the first woman of color and the first South Asian woman to be elected as Second Vice Chair of Minnesota’s DFL. She has been involved with the DFL party since 2006. Recently Shivanthi was in the news to dismantle” the Minneapolis Police Department. She was now advocating for tougher crime laws following a traumatic carjacking incident outside her home. Sathanandan described the brutal attack that took place in front of her young children. She suffered a broken leg, deep head lacerations, and numerous bruises and cuts during the ordeal. She posted her picture on her social media handle after the attack. After this incident, The Minneapolis Police Department confirmed the carjacking and said that they would arrest the culprits.
