Who is Vyommitra? Meet The Female Robot That ISRO Is Sending On The Moon

Who is Vyommitra? Meet The Female Robot That ISRO Is Sending On The Moon: Vyommitra is a human-looking spacefaring robot that has been designed by the Indian Space Research Organisation. It was designed to function onboard the Gaganyaan, a crewed orbital spacecraft. The look of the humanoid robot was first revealed on 22 January 2020 by the Human Spacelight and Exploration Symposium in Bengaluru on 17 January 2020.

The main intention behind the creation of the humanoid robot, Vyommitra is that they want to determine the phenomenon of what weightlessness and UV radiations do to a human body on exposure for a long duration. It has bee even been mentioned that the humanoid robot would be used to conduct microgravity experiments.

Vyommitra: ISRO’s Greatest Invention

Vyommitra is the combination of two Sanskrit words meaning space and friend. It is a human-looking spacefaring robot that has been designed by the Indian Space Research Organisation. It was designed to function onboard the Gaganyaan, a crewed orbital spacecraft. In addition, recently, the Union Minister of State for Space, Dr. Jitendra Singh declared that the trials for the Gagayaan mission will start by October and opened up about the news of Vyommitra.

Vyommitra’s Capabilities:

Vyommitra is the prototype of the half-humanoid. It has been designed for the first unmanned Gaganyaan mission. It made its first appearance on 17 January 2020 at the opening of the event Human Spaceflight and Exploration-Present Challenges and Future Trends. the humanoid robot can monitor through module parameters and can even send alerts and perform life-supporting operations. In addition, it can perform tasks like switch panel operations.

At the same time, Vyommitra has some human-like features. Like, it can even be a companion and converse with the astronauts, recognizing them, and responding to their queries. ISRO has stated that Vyommitra can even simulate human functions in space. In addition, it can even interact with the environmental control life system.

The main aim behind the mission was to determine the human spaceflight capability. The mission is to send a crew of three members to an orbit of 400km for a three-day mission. It will bring them safely by landing them on sea waters.

There are many prerequisites for the Gaganyan Mission including the development of many critical technologies like the launch of a human-rated vehicle for safely taking the crew to space. In addition, it will have to provide a life-supporting system to provide an earth-like environment to the crew in the space. The mission even has to take care of the escape provisions and evolve the crew management aspects for training, rehabilitation, and recovery of the crew.

Vyommitra: A Stepping Stone Behind ISRO’s Major Projects:

ISRO website has stated that it has previously planned many missions prior to Gaganyaan. The missions will show the technology preparedness before launching Vyommitra into space. It will help to investigate the repercussions of the Human Space Flight Mission. The other demonstrator mission even includes the Integrated AirDrop Test, Pad Abort Test, and Test Vehicle Flights. In addition, it will even help to understand the safety and reliability of the system prior to sending humans into space.

Vyommitra: A Change for India:

While many countries send animals into space to see the impact of the mission.ISRO has changed the step. It plans not to fly any animals in the space. Consequently, the humanoid robot will be used to test the weightlessness and radiation impact on the human body. Vyommitra has even been designed to speak in multiple languages, like English and Hindi. It can even provide warnings for the change in environmental air pressure.
